He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Helmick and Cora Elizabeth Helmick (Justice); his siblings, Edward, Calvin, John, Bernard Helmick, Virginia, Lena and Mary Ruth; and his stepson Ronald McCullough.
He is survived by: his wife Hazel Helmick (Pershing); his children, Michael Sue Sonderman (Andy), Thomas Helmick (Rosemary) and Judi Pontuti (Rocco) of Watauga, TX; his stepchildren, Roger McCullough, Debra Bartlebaugh (Daniel) and Cherry Tree; his grandchildren, Emily, Derek Smith, Melanie and Brian Bucher; and his stepgrandchildren, Danny, Jackie Bartlebaugh, Mike, Sarah Bartlebaugh, Kayla and Johnny Fantini. He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
