He was predeceased by: his parents, James Patterson and Elizabeth "Betty" Patterson (Davidson); and also Sara Anne Stier. He is survived by: his siblings, Wendy K. Stier (late Ronald) and Mark Patterson (Sue); his significant other Rita Ann Holtman; his stepchildren, Anastasia Schaeffer (late Garrett), Jeffrey Holtman, Joshua Holtman, Sr., Stephanie Berkey (Donald), Bethany Imm, Nickolas Imm and Jeremy Imm; and also Liz Santavicca (Aaron).
