James R. McMullen Obituary

Beloved husband, father, Pappy, brother, uncle and friend died on Monday, January 2nd while spending the winter in Florida. Jim was born on July 17, 1940 in Bellefonte to the late Harry (Whitey) and Pearl McMullen. He is survived by his children Randy McMullen and Lori (Mark) Proper of Florida, and Greg (Mary Cay) McMullen of North Carolina; his grandchildren Cassie (Matt) Richardson, Angie (Scott) Pitaro, Robbie (Fiancee Maddy) Proper and Oscar, Anna Catharine, and Aiden McMullen; his brothers Ken (Joan), Jack, and Dick (Arlene) McMullen and sister Sally Heil; sisters-in-law Connie Eckley and Alice McMullen and brothers-in-law Sam Keller and Terry Brooks; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Anna Mae (Brooks), his brothers Harp, Bob and Don and his sisters Anna, Eloise and Eleanor.

Jim was a 1958 graduate of Bald Eagle Area High School. He was a gifted athlete excelling in football and baseball. In 1959, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served though 1962 in the special services recreation department and as a medical corpsman. He was a foreman for many years at Bellefonte Lime Company before retiring early to help care for his grandchildren and to start a business with Ann selling college imprinted clothing and gifts. Jim was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Bellefonte. He volunteered for many years at Centre Crest and was a member of the Bellefonte Elks and Moose as well as the Bellefonte Masonic Lodge No. 268 F. & A. M. where he served as Worshipful Master in 2008.

Jim loved sports (especially Penn State and Pittsburgh teams) but his passion was golf which he played for many, many years with Earl, Frank and Whitey at Nittany Country Club. He enjoyed cooking for his family and their friends and his spaghetti dinners were legendary! In his later years, he enjoyed playing bingo (although he rarely won!) and spending his winters in Florida.

Jim's greatest blessing was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was a hardworking, proud, caring and generous man who will be greatly missed by many.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made in Jim's memory to the Bob Perks Fund, P. O. Box 313, State College, PA 16804 which helps local families struggling with cancer.
