He was predeceased by: his parents, Harmel Dhans and Virgina Dhans (DeBlander); his son James J. Dhans, Jr.; his grandson Joseph "Joey" Dhans; and his siblings, Flora, Zack, Pearl, Lee, Herman "Speed" and Evelyn.

He is survived by: his wife Eleanor Dhans (Miller); his grandchildren, Michael Dhans (Amy), Joseph Dhans (Melanie), Vicki Dhans (Tina Hohn-Dhans) and Debbie Spotti; and his great grandchildren, Josh Delaney (Faith), Shane Dhans (Ashlea), Sierra Dhans, Paige Kahlbaugh, Jr. (Mark), Riley Dhans, Garrett Dhans (Ashley Cunningham), Dylan Dhans (Katie), Jessica Berty (Tim), Jessie Noble (Valerie) and Jason Dhans.
