He was predeceased by: his parents, Lester "Fat" Shaffer and Ruth Shaffer (Spiker); his wife Patsy R. Shaffer (Hay); his sons, John Michael Shaffer and Bruce Edward Shaffer; his siblings, Sonny, Lester, Zane, Claire Shaffer and Stella Edmiston; and his great grandchild Tezmurai Shaffer.
He is survived by: his grandsons, Bruce Shaffer and John Shaffer; his great grandchild Haley Shaffer of Adel, GA; his sisters-in-law, Linda McGinley, Mary Shaffer, Georgia and Pat Shaffer; and also, Missy Davis and Allysa Bumbarger. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
