He was predeceased by: his parents, Dorrance Gates and Helen Jennings Gates; and his sisters, Joyce Patton and Linda Gates. He is survived by: his wife Karen Adams Gates; his sons, Kenneth and Kevin (Terri); and his grandchildren, Christopher (Tracy), Ryan (Kristin), Dylan (Shannon) and Devan Brown (Daniel). He is also survived by seven great-grandchildren.
