He was predeceased by: his siblings, Alex Dever and Rita Dever Ignas. He is survived by: his wife Frances; his sons, Joseph Jr. (Kim), Jonathan (Chrissy) and James (Emily Dever); his grandchildren, Jonathan Jr., Sadie, Anna, Grace and Henry Dever; his sister-in-law Peg Dever; and his nieces, Kathy Dever Ryan and Margaret Dever Hussey. He is also survived by father of his three sons.

In lieu of flowers, Joe has asked for donations to the Wounded Warriors Project.
