He was predeceased by: his brothers, Donald and John Hess; his grandson David Hess; his great grandchild Ryder Farrow; and his parents, Lloyd Hess and Annie Hess (Calvin).
He is survived by: his wife Beatrice Geraldine Hess (Brown); his children, Geoffrey Hess, Nancy Pettie (John), Richard "Rick" Hess, Jr. (June), Ruth Eichler (Robert) and Melissa Hess; his granddaughters, Laura Hess, Cherie Weaver, Michelle Pettie, Stephanie Pettie, Jennifer Farrow and Megan Ramsburg; his great grandchildren, Patrick Mattingly, Shannon Mattingly, Joey Caplinger, Gavin Rouse, Ilana Rouse, Chase Farrow, Madison Ramsburg and Jackson Ramsburg; and his brother Leo Hess. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
