He was predeceased by: his parents, John A. Gowarty and Helen Vesek Gowarty; his wife Mary Lou Gowarty; his son Steven Gowarty; and his brothers, Jim, Robert and Thomas Gowarty (John).
He is survived by: his children, Mike (Linda Gowarty) of Lancaster and Deborah (Bob Kuhn) of New Freedom; his grandchildren, Stephanie, Melissa, Amanda, Steven and Christopher; his siblings, Dennis Gowarty of Pittsburgh, Diane Horak of Carnegie, Rosanne (Dennis Covey) of Miami, OK and Barbara (Donald Thomas) of Jenners; and his sister-in-law Pat Gowarty of Kingwood, WV.. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren.
