He was predeceased by: his parents, Julius Barto and Anna Barto (Yurkowsky); his daughter Ellen Koontz (David Koontz); and his siblings, William and Helen Shook.
He is survived by: his wife Carole (Stahl); his daughters, Constance Hawkins (John Hawkins) and Alice Urban (Vincent Urban); his grandchildren, Daniel Urban, Stephen Urban, Sarah Tozer Ferrell, Jonathan Hawkins, Erin Bollinger and Neil Koontz; and his great grandchildren, William, Aurora Bollinger, Audrey Tozer, Nora Ferrell, Kaia, Kihei Urban, Hadley Urban, Owen and Lily Hawkins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Hospital.
