He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Smith and Virginia Smith (Russell); and his siblings, Richard Smith and Patricia Polston. He is survived by: his wife Nancy L. Smith (Horst); and his children, Elizabeth "Beth" Smith of Carlisle, Mervin Smith of Lebanon and Bryan Smith (Amanda) of Palmyra. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, and 12 great grandchildren.
