He was predeceased by: his parents, James D. Harter and Charlotte Zimmerman Harter; his children, Patty Harter and Brett Harter; and his brothers, Jack Harter and Douglas Harter.

He is survived by: his wife Joan E. Miller Harter; and his children, Doug Harter (Sally), Jim Harter (Marie) and Cherie Finley. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, five great-great grandchildren.
