He was predeceased by: his parents, John Herman Brenkman and Christine; and his sister Anna Wurst. He is survived by: his children, J. Gary Brenkman (late Larry Judd) and Nancy Lawrence (Thomas J. Lawrence Jr.); and his grandchildren, Thomas J. Lawrence III (Marina), Brian Lawrence and Sean Lawrence.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Walter's name to: Montgomery County SPCA, Red Cross, Alzheimer's Association or Human Rights Campaign.
