He was predeceased by: his parents, Ralph S. Merkel and Lillian Merkel (Butterweck); and his brother William Rutter. He is survived by: his wife Marie Merkel (Flood); his daughter Anne Marie Garncarz (John); and his grandchildren, Thomas R. Garncarz (Yiran) and Samuel R. Garncarz.
