He was loved and cherished by many people including: his father Joseph; his son Michael D. McDonnell, Jr. of Lake Ariel; his stepdaughters, Shari McKay of El Paso, TX and Kathleen Duran of Tarpon Springs, FL; and his siblings, Margy Coccodrilli of Lake Ariel, Eileen Lubaszewski of Lake Ariel, Patti McCullough of Bloomsburg, Kathy Massino of Mechanicsville, VA, Tom McDonnell of Lake Ariel and Marty McDonnell of Bumpass.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Michael's memory may be made to: The Wounded Warrior Project.
