He was predeceased by: his parents, Howard James and Vallie Gertrude Hess (Ward); his daughter Darlene Frances Hess; and his brothers, Howard "Buss" Hess, Duane "Duke" Hess and Darrell Hess.
He is survived by: his wife Dorothy June Gossett; his children, Harvey C. Hess of Chandler, Gregory Hess (Kimberly) of Palm Springs, Keith Hess (Gina) of Orlando, Mary Beth Hallman (Joseph) of Batesburg, Christopher Hess (Dianne) of Jefferson Hills and Bradley Hess (Cindy) of Anna, Ohio; his brother Gary Hess (Carolyn) of Fort Mill; and his sister-in-law Betty Hess (late Darrell) of West Mifflin, Pennsylvania.. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren.
