He was predeceased by: his parents, John Thornton and Sophie Thornton (Klajnowski); his wife Mary (Kerber); his sister Toni Sweeney; his brother-in-law Bruce Gray; and his son-in-law Richard Carlson.
He is survived by: his daughters, Sharon Carlson, Dawn Thornton (Steven Linn) and Carrie Peterson (Steve); his grandchildren, Casey, Kara, Jessica, Lucas and Benjamin; and his siblings, Carol Wolfe, Janice Gray and David Thornton (Gladys). He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
