He was predeceased by: his parents, Darris Sr. Merkel and Marian Merkel (Logsdon); and his brother Terry L. Merkel. He is survived by: his wife Carol Sue Merkel (Waltman); his children, Kara L. Merkel of Ellerslie and Lucas J. Merkel of Ellerslie; his granddaughter Marianna; and his siblings, Darris "Butch" Merkel (Cecelia), Judith Beals (Rholand) and Mary Gray (Glenn) of Ocala, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
