He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph C. Pittenger and Opal Pittenger (Hummer); his wife Mary Ann Pittenger (Martin); and his grandson Michael Brian Shepherd. He is survived by: his children, Robert D Pittenger, Jr. (DJ Middleton) of Atascadero and Tina R. Shepherd of Atascadero; his stepdaughters, Betsy R. Quigley (Thomas) of Penns Valley, PA and Susan R. Hartman (David, Sr) of Hesston, PA; his daughter Connie; and his grandchildren, Liam S Quigley, Finnegan K Quigley and Emily P Hartman.
