He was predeceased by: his parents, William D. Sr. Thompson and Pauline Thompson (Bowman); his brother Robert A. Thompson; and his brother-in-law Charles W. Densevich. He is survived by: his wife Anne Thompson (Densevich); his children, William D. Thompson III (Dana) of Altoona, Susan L. Summers (Matt) of Pasadena and Michael D. Thompson (Nicole Ballos) of East Norriton; his grandchildren, William D. Thompson IV, Alfred James Thompson, Gabrielle A. Summers and Bryan M. Summers; and his siblings-in-law, Candace Thompson of LaGrange, Frank and John Densevich. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
