He was predeceased by: his stepdaughter Christina Borton; his parents, Leslie Merchant and Elsie Merchant (Scott); his sister Catherine; and his great grandchildren, Zachary and Silas.
He is survived by: his wife Lois Nottingham Abbey; his former wife Patricia Merchant of Corry; his children, Raymond L. Merchant, Sharon, Susan Walter (Leslie), Carol Duperree (Roger), R. I., Gary Merchant (Maree Beth) and Jay Merchant (Luz Angelica); and his stepchildren, Russell Montague (Jodee) and Stacy Hennigh (Greg).
