He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Anthony Szerlag and Monica Szerlag (Klimaszewski); his child Jillian; and his sister Donna Paolino (Jim). He is survived by: his wife Jane Szerlag (McMahon); his children, Stephanie, Stephen (Lindsay), Jennifer (Bobby) and Joseph; his grandchildren, Laila, Emma, Jake, Henry, Alexis and Juniper; his siblings, Cindy Havas (Dave), Janice Reed (Ed) and David Szerlag (Laura); and his pet Molly.
