He was loved and cherished by many people including : his parents, Marcel Hughes and Pearl Say Hughes; his wife Mary Ann Ferguson of Harrisville; and his grandson Jackson Shaffer. He was also cherished by several other nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Gary's honor be sent to the Grace United Methodist Church in Grove City or the Slippery Rock Library.
