He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Smajda Sr. and Elizabeth Smajda (Tomasko); his brothers, Joseph, Francis and John; his daughter Michelle Stango; and his wife Gaynell "Jean" Clark Smajda.

He is survived by: his daughters, Jean Marie Staznik (Gabriel B. Staznik), Mary Ellen Gromley (Randall Gromley), Kay Elizabeth Smajda and Diana Lynn Sprucebank; his grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Winter, Toni, Justin, Gabriel, Destiny and Marija; and his great grandchildren, Tanner, Dean, Riley, Jett, Juliette, Gabriel, Ava and Camden.
