He was predeceased by: his parents, Claude T. Matthews and Eurydice Schaffer Matthews; and his siblings, Elanor Matthews Civish, Lavina Bunting Hancock, Evelyn Stevenson, J. Addison Matthews and Willard Matthews.
He is survived by: his wife Patricia Newbell Matthews; his stepson Mark Hare (Cindy); his grandchildren, Sean Hare (Gina), Dr. Sarah Hare (Kelly Davis) and Serena Humphrey (William); his great grandchildren, Jackson, Cody, Baby Girl Hare and Bailey Faye Humphrey; his stepson Tim Hare (Lisa); and his grandchildren, Tyler, Olivia and Kellie Hare.
