He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence N. Shaffer (Pete) and Viola Vere Reed Shaffer; and his sister Linda Shaffer. He is survived by: his wife Frieda Hirschberger of Petzenhausen; his children, Yvonne Shaffer of Meadville, Kurt Shaffer (Lu Ann) of Cochranton, Linda Zimmer (Dave) of Erie, Kent Shaffer of Erie, Lisa Sacchi of Guys Mills, Lori Lang of Meadville and Ebony Benge of Meadville; his sister Joyce Thomas (Don) of Greenville; and his son-in-law James D. Lang. He is also survived by twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a niece; and three nephews.
