He was predeceased by: his wife Joyce Youngman. He is survived by: his son Brian Friesen; his granddaughter Raven Friesen; and his siblings, Robert Friesen (Helen), Rosalie Smith, David Friesen (Connie) and Shirley Yates.
True to his love of learning, during the Covid-19 pandemic he took a 26-session online graduate-level course in Principles of Virology from Columbia University.
