He was predeceased by: his parents, William Bates and Elizabeth Bates (Bailey); his sister Linda; and his brothers-in-law, Robert Blissman and Richard Brisbane.
He is survived by: his wife Sally Bates (Smail); his children, Elizabeth Bush and Jason Bates (Sara); his grandchildren, Addison, Emily, Luci, Caroline and Rocco; and his sister Mary Brisbane. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Westmoreland County Humane Society.
