He was predeceased by: his parents, Melchior Abel and Kathrene Abel (Czyrak); his brothers, Frank and Louis (Doris); his son Jeffrey; his granddaughter Joanna; and his great grandchild Noah.
He is survived by: his wife Doris Courts; his sister Mary Slick; and his children, Doris Cattie (David), Joseph (Christine Christopher), Debora Barnes (Peter J. Jr.), James (late Marybeth Soldo), Diane Oertel (Thomas), Jay and Jack (Lenore Pompilio). He is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Lung Association, The Lupus Foundation, or the favorite charity of the donor's choice.
