Joan A. Liehe Obituary
Joan passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones. She was 83 years old, born in East Chicago, Indiana on June 29th, 1941, to the late Isabelle (Confer) Liehe and Hubert James Liehe.
After graduating from Butler University, Joan spent two years in the Peace Corps, living in Bolivia teaching music but frequently without access to actual instruments. She carried on undaunted by those challenges and then returned to the US two years later to begin teaching in Philadelphia as an itinerant music teacher sometimes traveling to more than eight schools a week. After a few years, she continued her teaching career in Cheltenham Township first at Rowland Elementary and then Cedarbrook Middle School from which she retired in 1997.
When she was not working, she enjoyed birding, traveling, camping, fishing, tennis, playing games, puzzling, reading, and SINGING, always singing. She was a gifted sight-reader, well-loved and an inspiration in every choir she sang with over the last 70 plus years.
She is survived by Elayne Aion, her partner and wife of 28 years; stepchildren Justin Aion (Sara), Myles Aion (Kris Yoh) and Hannah Peele (John Collins); sister Bev Kussy, brother Bill Liehe (Jean), and sister-in-law Jan Liehe; granddaughters Harper, Brynn, and Maeve, and many, many other friends and family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved brother Clifford Liehe and brother-in-law Bud Kussy.
A celebration of Joan's life will take place on Saturday, November 2nd in Glenside and will also be zoom/live-streamed for those who would like to attend from afar. More details to follow on this site and for additional information, please see her CaringBridge page:
