He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Henry Rainey and Ethel Marie Connor Rainey; his grandson Brandon E. Thomas; and his siblings, James, Charles, Benjamin, Donald Rainey, Eileen Lohr and Alvassa Hopkins.
He is survived by: his spouse Jean L. Dowlin Rainey; his close friend Ethel; his children, David Ruffner, Joseph T. Rainey and Patricia J. Greenland (Tim); his grandchildren, Jordan N. Thomas and Jennifer Ruffner; his great grandchildren, Amari S. Thomas and Leo E. Thomas; and his siblings, Richard Rainey and Lois Smith. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
