He was predeceased by: his parents, Martin Barrett and Lillian Krebs Barrett; his son Martin J. Barrett; and his siblings, Albert Barrett, Martin Barrett Jr. and Mary Goff.

He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Gosner Barrett; his children, Joseph Barrett Jr. (Donna), Kathleen Brophy, Robert Barrett (Yen) and Patty Barrett; and his daughter-in-law Jeanne Barrett. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
