He was predeceased by: his parent Joseph Paul; his wife Virginia Cornwell (Poulson); his children, Sylvia Ruth Cornwell and Douglas T. Cornwell; his siblings, Esther East, Richard Cornwell and Paul "Buster" Cornwell; and his granddaughter Rivka Cornwell.

He is survived by: his parent Sylvia Ann Cornwell (Richardson); his children, Debra L. Cornwell, John B. Cornwell Jr., Paul J. Cornwell, Debbie Cornwell (Gibbs), Russell K. Cornwell (Nancy) and Gregory M. Cornwell; and his sister Arlene B. Byrne. He is also survived by ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
