Jeff Belden wrote a sympathy message

“I was Engineering Officer on the USS Joseph Hewes during the time Jim was promoted from First Class Machinist Mate to Chief Machinist Mate. Jim was the consummate professional as best exemplified when, in mid Atlantic while deploying with a carrier battle group to the Mediterranean, a leak developed in the high pressure, super-heated steam line leading to the ship's turbines. The speed of Jim's team in making repairs earned them a "Well Done!" from the admiral. May you have God's blessing, Jim!”

Jim Petrausch wrote a sympathy message

“Jim was a good friend of mine. When on board the USS Joseph Hewes, in late 72 or 73, we were in Hawaii, and I aided in initiating him as a Chief Machinist Mate. Finally got to see him again at a reunion in San Diego, and most recently at the 2018 reunion in San Antonio. Deepest condolences to Maggie, family and friends. Jim Petrausch, USN Retired.”
