He was predeceased by: his parents, Edward Banja and Eleanor Banja; his grandparents, Jerry and Frances DeMelfi; his great-grandparents, Dominic and Ella DeStefano; and his uncle Nicolas DeMelfi.

He is survived by: his pets, Maverick and Goose; his uncles, Edward (Lee Banja), John (Dee Banja) and Michael (Beth Banja); his aunt Gloria (Matt Balas); his great-grandparents, Michael and Anna Banja; and his aunts, Arlene and Lucille Gessner.

“Joel was my best friend at heart. He was a big influence on my beliefs and standards. I had only got the chance to know Joel for about a year before his passing. During that year we went through unimaginable things that I won’t say. Some things he put me through as well. For the entire first year of his passing I did not sleep one good night and my life was heading down the drain. I’m Aaron Wagner. The son of his girlfriend.
