Michael Sheruda Obituary

Michael Sheruda, 92, of Justus, died Sunday morning July 19, 2015 at home. He is survived by his wife the former Ann Walinger. Born in Dickson City, he was the son of the late Luke and Ksenia Pronko Sheruda and he was a member of St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City and he was a member of the Ushers Society. He was a graduate of Dickson City High School and after graduation he joined the Navy.

He retired in March 1962 off of the USS Antietam with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After retiring from the navy he worked for Sears Roebuck Co. During his career in the Navy, he served on many ships, the USS Gleaves, USS Chekaskia in the Persian Gulf 1948, USS McComb, a destroyer and mine sweeper, USS Maloy, a destroyer escort, USS Antietam CV 36 and the USS Avery Island.

During World War II he was involved with the invasion of North Africa; Gela, Sicily; Salerno, Italy; Anzio, Italy; and landings in France and Okinawa, and helped with the recovery of POW's in Japan after World War II. He also participated in Atomic Bomb tests, Bikini Atoll while aboard the USS Avery Island. He was a member of the FRA branch # 288, Duryea, and the American Legion Post 665, Dickson City, and a life member of the Palma Hunting and Gun Club..

He enjoyed helping his son and grandchildren on the farm. He was happiest on the seat of a tractor teaching his grandchildren about farming. He loved the farm and the animals and was an inspiration of a hard working man. Surviving are two sons, Gary Sheruda and wife, Katie, West Chester and Michael Sheruda and wife, Beverly, Fleetville; five grandchildren, Michelle Routhier and husband, Lt.

Col. David Routhier, VA, Michael G. Sheruda VMD and wife, Maral Avetian Sheruda, VMD, Fleetville, Matthew J. Sheruda, Jessica M. Sheruda and Daniel R. Sheruda, all of Fleetville; two great grandchildren, William and David Routhier, VA; a brother, Peter Sheruda, Media, PA; sisters, Anastasia Mazur, Mt. Cobb, Dorothy Maday, Peckville and Milldred Kuzmiak and husband, Michael, Justus; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by brothers, John, Steve and Joseph Sheruda and sisters, Mae Regan, Helen Barry, Jean Masko and Ann Solomon. The funeral with military honors will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home, Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City with mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Mary's Visitation Church, Dickson City.
