He was predeceased by: his parents, George C. Smith and Lois Polcha Smith. He is survived by: his wife Kathleen Sears Smith; his son Cory (Annaliza); his grandchildren, Alessandra, Benjamin, Charles and Elena; his son Mark (Erin); his grandchildren, Nathan, Kassidy, Colin, Andrew and William; his great grandchild Meghan; his sisters, Gayle Padfield (Richard) and Eleanor Kish; and his caregivers, Wayne, Dr. Donald Preate Jr., Dr. Carl Barsigian of Jennifer Pierce, PAC and Dr. Joseph Wang. He is also survived by several nieces, and great-nieces and nephews.

“Wayne made one of the greatest impacts on my life as well as the lives of many others. The lessons learned in his classroom and under his baton far surpass just music and are life lessons. He leaves a legacy of these lessons through the students he taught. These are carried on in band rooms, classrooms, board rooms, or wherever his students work and live. I am blessed and grateful to have had him as a teacher. My condolences to his family, whom he so obviously loved and was very proud of.”
