He was predeceased by: his parents, Fern E. Matthews and Margaret T. Matthews (Carnathan); and his brothers, Paul D. and Alan J. Matthews. He is survived by: his wife Viola M. Matthews (Paulus); his children, Paul J. Matthews (Marsha), Donna Brubaker (Swade Rotz) and Merle Matthews Jr. (Nancy); and his grandchildren, Rebecca, Morgan, Evan, Marissa, Samantha, Courtney, Jacob and Aaron.
