He was predeceased by: his wife Catherine Judith Lee; his parents, Frank Gavern and Ida Pietrarelli Gavern; and his siblings, Nicholas, Amadeo (Mato), Joseph Gavern and Rosemarie Verrastro.
He is survived by: his children, Kelly (Joseph McCool), Kathleen (Attorney Joseph Caputo), Covington Twp, Frank A. Gavern (Valarie), Springbrook Twp, Dean Gavern, Madison Twp and Nicole Gavern; and his grandchildren, Jordan McCool, Morgan McCool, Gianna Caputo, Donato Caputo, Francesco Gavern, Matthew Gavern and Grace Gavern. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
