He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas E. Bates and Sarah Bates (Keim); and his brother Jack M. Bates. He is survived by: his wife Janice L. Bates (Brumbaugh) of Derry; his children, Jack M. Bates (Rosalie) of Osceola, PA and Judy B. Scavino (Hugo) of Florida; his grandchildren, Paul Scavino, Carl Scavino, Thomas Bates (Marlene) and Sarah Bates; and his sisters, Joellyn Supancic (William) of Penn and Janette McDowell of Vancouver, WA..
