He was predeceased by: his parents, Horace Filer and Myrtle Filer (Giles); his wife Barbara G. Filer; and his siblings, Harriet Louise Filer Parker, Charles, Raymond and Mont Filer.

He is survived by: his children, Shirley Harding (Jim Jones) of Mercer, Mary Ann Filer (Dana Scheppelmann) of Meadville, Richard Filer (Darlene) of Mercer and Mark "Dink" Filer (Missy) of Mercer; his grandchildren, Amanda, Jacob, Jesse Filer, David and Ryan Scheppelmann; and his great grandchild Paislee Grace Filer.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital or Strayhaven Animal Shelter in Greenville.
