He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Patterson and Dorothy Patterson (Shankle); his wife Janet L. Patterson (Gromley); his daughter Vicki Shaffer; his grandchildren, Debora, Timothy and James; and his siblings, Millie Stewart, Thelma Patterson, Eleanor Hill (Carl) and Joseph (Jack Patterson).
He is survived by: his children, Bill Patterson (Joy), Barbara Kester (Chris) and Scott Patterson (Kelly); his son-in-law Walt Shaffer; and his siblings, Tom Patterson, Glenn Patterson (Connie), Richard Patterson (Rose), Helen Patterson (Francis), Shirley Lute (Sam) and Diana Detwiler (Wayde). He is also survived by seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren.
