He was predeceased by: his parents, James J. and Ellen Hancock McLaughlin; and his brothers, James E. McLaughlin and William Abbot. He is survived by: his wife Joyce Perry McLaughlin; his children, John McLaughlin, Jr., Sean McLaughlin, Matthew McLaughlin and Heather Swartwood (Warren); his brother Charles P. McLaughlin (Natalina); his sister-in-law Dorothy "Dottie" McLaughlin; his grandchildren, Collin, Brenden and Quinn; and his brother-in-law Howard (Nelda Perry). He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
