He was predeceased by: his parents, Alton Derr and Bernice Derr (Klingaman). He is survived by: his daughters, Stacie Lopsonzski (Anthony) and Katie Landis (Andrew); his grandchildren, Jaydin Riley, Charlotte Eva, Jakob Thomas and Nicholas Thomas; and his siblings, Robert Derr (Candi), Deborah Rizzotto (Thomas), Patricia Hunger and Mark Derr. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be presented to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in loving memory of Thomas and his nephew, Timmy Hunger.
