He was predeceased by: his daughter Greta Kivela Rogier; his brother Alan David Kivela, Sr.; and his significant other Jussi Poika. He is survived by: his stepdaughter Tina; his spouse Allene; his daughter Tina Grove; his grandsons, Adam Walter of Reynoldsburg, OH and Matthew John Grove of Reynoldsburg, OH; his daughter Tonya Keffer; his son-in-law Todd; his grandchildren, Dayton Lane and Landen James Keffer of Clear Brook, VA.; his sister Shirley Gleason of Bakersfield, CA; and also, John and Allene. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
During this next phase of his life, he enjoyed "retirement" by working in civil service at Fort Ritchie and later at Fort Detrick & Site R. He retired again in 2006 to care for his wife in her continuing battle against Alzheimer's.
