He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Helen M. Nelson; his children, Maryellen Ludascher (late Robert Ludascher), Martin J. Nelson (Cheryl), Katie Layman (Garry), Patricia Nelson, John Savoca and Stephen Nelson (Joan); and his grandchildren, Jennifer Brady (Mike), Shannon Dogmanits (Josh), Sean Ludascher, Katelyn Ludascher, Nicole Talarico (Joe), Michael Nelson (Devin), Christopher Nelson (Allison), Alexandra Layman, Taylor Phillips (Kyle) and Elizabeth Savoca. He was also cherished by 12 great grandchildren.
