He was predeceased by: his parents, William Johns and Elizabeth Johns (Wrobleski); his daughter Teresa Johns; and his sister Patricia Hall. He is survived by: his children, Lisa Carter (Cornell), Melissa Lansberry (Keith), Gary Johns, Jr. (Charlotte Webb) and Stephen Johns (Brandy Charles); his siblings, Sharon Price (John), Valarie Morris (Graham B. Morris), Julie Flick (Ron), Joyce Spencer (Chalmer), Billie Jo Johns (Jim Spencer) and Dennis Johns (Jackie); and his former wife Helen Yerega. He is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
