He was predeceased by: his parents, John Joseph and Myrtle Ann Smith (Reid); his former wife Maureen Teresa Smith (Rihm); his sister Eileen Cummins; and his stepson Richard Gengler.
He is survived by: his wife Caroline Gengler; his sons, Donald J. Smith, Jr. (Amy), David J. Smith (Amma), Dennis E. Smith (Cindy) and Daniel J. Smith (Jennifer); and his stepdaughters, Terry and Lori. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren.
