With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Edwin Frank Ochester (Apollo, Pennsylvania), born in Brooklyn, New York, who passed away on August 22, 2023 at the age of 83. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

He was predeceased by: his wife Britt Horner; and his parents, Edwin Otto Ochester and Viola Ochester (Bachtle). He is survived by: his children, Ned Ochester of Pittsburgh and Betsy Ochester (Mike Sauter) of Pittsburgh; and his grandchild Quincy Sauter.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Ed's favorite public radio station, WYEP.org, or Four-Footed Friends, a local animal shelter he supported.

“Ed's poems sounded conversational but contained lightning flashes of beauty, humor, and above all meaning. He was a vital and inspiring teacher not only at Pitt but in the low-residency writing program at Bennington College. No one else came to graduation ceremonies in full academic regalia and tennis shorts. He was an inspiration. My heartfelt condolences to his family.”

“Ed was a terrific poet and mentor of poets. And of others as well. I worked with him in my early days at Pitt, through the Alternative Curriculum--he also helped me teach a course in poetry writing (together with a student writer). He did much to make Pitt a center and nurturing home for poets and other writers as well, and grew their audience--not only through the books published in the Pitt Poetry Series but also in other ways.”
