He was predeceased by: his parents, James Mitchell and Clarissa Mitchell (Cook); his son James David Mitchell; and his siblings, Shirley, Gayle Mitchell and James Mitchell.
He is survived by: his wife Doris Mitchell (Burkett); his children, Walter Mitchell, Deborah Tallerico, Clarissa Mitchell (Jerry) and Gayle Mitchell of Apollo; and his sister Chris Mitchell. He is also survived by four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
